Description: Chateau Carbonnieux 2023

The Chateau Carbonnieux 2023 vintage experienced weather conditions largely consistent with thirty-year norms.

Bud-break began at the end of March, followed by a brief cold spell in early April. Thanks to late pruning and protective measures, damage was minimized. Spring was warm with rainfall near average, leading to promising bunch emergence. Flowering started on the 18th and benefited from favorable summer conditions.

High humidity and mild nights in early summer increased disease and pest pressure, but our vigilant winegrowers managed to contain these threats. Green harvesting eliminated damaged bunches without affecting the final yield.

Summer rainfall was average, with moderate temperatures until mid-August. The intense heat in the last two weeks of August and early September promoted optimal ripening.

Harvesting began on August 24 and continued until early October.

  • Continued the uprooting/planting program, covering 3 to 6 hectares per year.

Cultural Method:

  • The vineyard is 100% eco-responsible, using various methods:
    • 100% cultivated without CMR, PE, and herbicides, mostly under organic control
    • 25% of the vineyard is organically cultivated
  • Single vineyard around Château with parcel-based management from vine to end of aging.
  • Member of EMS Bordeaux and HVE3-certified vineyard since 2017

Average Age of Vineyard: 26 years

Aging: 40% new oak in Bordeaux barrels for 15 to 18 months.

First Impression of the Chateau Carbonnieux 2023:

“The 2023 vintage unfolded in two stages, with a climatically challenging growing season. Despite these difficulties, it produced some very interesting wines, both white and red. For white wines, a relatively cool summer allowed for optimal ripening and preserved the freshness of aromas. For red wines, the warm periods at the end of August and beginning of September favored grape ripening, achieving ideal maturity. In response to these variable conditions, our efforts focused on carefully choosing harvest dates to ensure the characteristic style of our wines.”
