Description of Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou 2023

The 2023 vintage of Château Ducru-Beaucaillou began with a mild winter, which led to early budburst on March 28. May’s warm and dry conditions were ideal for flowering and fruit set, with flowering starting early and rapidly on May 22, promising both high volume and quality. During the summer, persistent tropical humidity posed a threat of mildew, but strategic leaf-thinning and green harvesting measures were successfully implemented to manage yields and ensure perfect fruit ripeness. Veraison started on the Beaucaillou plateau on July 25. By mid-August, the humidity dissipated, ushering in a period of warm, dry weather that lasted until September 10. Consistently high temperatures in late August and early September facilitated exceptional ripening conditions, without any heatwave peaks, thus preserving freshness and promoting optimal ripeness throughout the harvest.

The wine offers a pure, concentrated nose with delicate violet perfume intertwined with rich black fruits, including blackcurrant and blackberry, accented by exotic spices and a hint of cedar wood. The palate is densely concentrated with great tannic richness, structured, and very finely grained, supported by exquisite saline freshness that adds succulence. This remarkable concentration leads to a very long, perfumed persistence, with subtle notes of star anise and gunflint on the finish.
