An ample and beautifully complex Pessac-Leognan Premier Grand Cru Classé

The estate: Chateau Haut-Brion, the oldest of Bordeaux’s Grand Crus, boasts a rich heritage dating back five centuries. Founded in 1533 by Jean de Pontac in the Graves region, its wines quickly gained fame and were appreciated by the greatest monarchs of Europe. In 1663, Samuel Pepys, an English member of parliament, unknowingly contributed to Haut-Brion’s success through his diary, describing it as “…a sort of French wine called Ho Bryan, that hath a good and most particular taste that I never met with.” This legend marked the beginning of its renowned status. Recognized as the first Grand Cru Classé outside the Médoc in 1855 and classified as a Cru Classé in the Official Classification of Graves Wines in 1959, Château Haut-Brion continues to uphold its legendary status among the world’s greatest wines, demonstrating exceptional consistency vintage after vintage.

The vineyard: Situated in the heart of the Pessac urban area, Château Haut-Brion enjoys an exceptional terroir on soils composed of multicolored gravel. These soils contribute to the production of sumptuous, elegant, and precise wines that exhibit remarkable consistency from one vintage to the next.

The vintage: Winter began with significant rainfall, replenishing water reserves, followed by mild weather from February onwards, leading to early budburst. Despite minimal impact from April frost, a mild May ensued, ensuring uniform and high-quality flowering. June rainfall compensated for earlier water deficits, preceding a hot, dry summer. However, the vines thrived under these conditions, supported by expert teams and adapted viticultural practices. Harvest for the 2022 vintage began on August 17 for whites, the earliest since 2003, with red harvesting commencing on August 29. Vineyard health was exceptional.

Winemaking and ageing: The wine underwent ageing in barrels (62.9%).

  • Merlot (53.6%)
  • Cabernet Sauvignon (35.4%)
  • Cabernet Franc (11%)
