Description of Chateau Leoville Poyferre 2023

Nobility and Generosity Chateau Leoville Poyferre 2023

Each vintage is a unique expression of our craft, shaped by our meticulous attention to detail and unwavering dedication. This pursuit of perfection is the cornerstone of our philosophy, guiding every decision and defining our identity.

The challenges posed by climate change and environmental factors have prompted us to reassess and adapt our practices. Precision is our guiding principle, essential for maintaining our commitment to excellence and preserving the distinctive character of Chateau Leoville Poyferre. The team’s unwavering dedication, executed with precision, has resulted in a vintage that balances generosity with nobility.

A mild, particularly wet winter was followed by a season punctuated by successive hailstorms. From late April until harvest, our teams responded with remarkable agility to this ongoing threat. Thanks to our anti-hail system, we emerged victorious, with our vineyards unscathed. Our weather stations played a crucial role, guiding our teams with precision in their vineyard work, amidst narrow windows of opportunity to protect the vines throughout their growth cycle.

Complex logistics were deployed to manage this demanding vintage, marked by recurrent storms. The commitment and responsiveness of the entire Léoville Poyferré team made all the difference until the sun returned in August.

September brought two significant events: a bountiful harvest and the arrival of Alix Combes, succeeding Bruno Clénet after his 25-year tenure. With his expertise and enthusiasm for meticulous viticulture, he embraced the precision of the intra-plot approach. As the harvest began on September 14th, lasting three long weeks, ideal conditions prevailed for continuing the precise work in the vineyard. Didier Thomann, the cellar master, likened it to “a very long, calm river,” delighted to see the vat room filled to a level not seen since its renovation in 2010!

Excitement was palpable as the harvest entered the vats, with the first macerations revealing promising quality. The Merlot grapes, already dark after pre-fermentation macerations, were gently extracted during alcoholic fermentation, limited to 26°C for the first time. Isabelle Davin, our in-house oenologist, described the Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon as “breathtaking,” a testament to the joy our team experienced in vinifying this vintage! The introduction of a new optical sorting machine and a new destemmer ensured rigorous grape selection, reflected in the high quality of the press wines.

Full-bodied, generous, powerful, and refreshingly fresh, the Chateau Leoville Poyferre 2023 vintage perfectly embodies the irresistible personality of Didier Thomann, who celebrated his 60th birthday between supervising two vats!
