Description of Chateau Pape Clement 2023

Château Pape Clément is one of the oldest Grands Crus of Bordeaux, with vineyards planted in the 13th century by Bertrand de Goth. After becoming the Pope in 1305 under the name Clement V, the Château was named in his honor. This estate has been producing wine on the same land since 1252.

The Harvest

The 2023 harvest began on August 23 with Sauvignon Gris and concluded on October 3 with the last of the Cabernet Sauvignon, marking a record 29 days of meticulous work for Chateau Pape Clement. Due to the varied ripening dynamics across different plots, it was crucial to stagger the harvest, ensuring each grape reached optimal ripeness. The decision to hand-pick each vine in multiple selections demonstrates the estate’s unwavering commitment to excellence.

The 2023 vintage demanded tenacity, adaptability, and patience, once again showcasing Château Pape Clément’s dedication to producing exceptional wine. The Merlot grapes in the reds exhibit a complex and intense aromatic palette, with notable generosity. Meanwhile, the smaller Cabernet Sauvignon grapes reveal a brilliant balance between richness and tension.

For the red wines, an “au naturel” approach signifies a commitment to authenticity. Indigenous yeasts contribute to the complexity and aromatic intensity, highlighting the unique characteristics of each parcel. Delicate and regular extraction ensures the tannins are robust yet silky, while maintaining the fruit’s intensity. A combination of carefully selected barrels, foudres, cement, and ceramic vats allows the wood to enhance the wine’s intrinsic personality without overpowering it.

In 2023, the red wines of Chateau Pape Clement offer an authentic sensory experience, celebrating the perfect symbiosis of nature, terroir, and savoir-faire.
