Chateau Pavie-Macquin 2023 description :

Vintage Chateau Pavie-Macquin 2023 at the Estate

Chateau Pavie Macquin is named after the grandfather of the current owners, Albert Macquin (1852-1911), who saved the vineyard from phylloxera devastation by using grafted vines. In 1994, Nicolas Thienpont was appointed as the manager, and in recent years, his son Cyrille has taken an active role.

The 2023 vintage highlights the plateau terroir, particularly benefiting from the inclusion of Cabernet Franc on limestone, which imparts brilliance, length, and a velvety texture to the wine. This year marks a significant achievement for the Thienpont-Derenoncourt team, celebrating 30 years of collaboration.

Average age of vineyard: 35 years

Terroir: Clay-limestone plateau on asteriated limestone

Vineyard management:

  • Combination of traditional ploughing and natural grassing.
  • Vineyard renewal program involving uprooting, replanting, and massal selection at higher density.
  • Numerous manual operations, including de-budding, leaf thinning, thinning out, and harvesting.

Special features:

  • Gravity-filled vatting of whole berries and parcel-by-parcel vinification in concrete vats.
  • Reduced aging on fine lees: the first racking occurs after 6 to 10 months, with a second one a year later, before bottling.
  • Fining and filtration are applied only if necessary.
