Chateau Pichon Baron 2023 Description

Chateau Pichon Baron 2023 : Our Grand Vin, Château Pichon Baron 2nd Grand Cru Classé in 1855, is crafted from the oldest vines on its historic estate. This authentic Pauillac offers an intense sensory experience with notes of black fruits and spices. Château Pichon Baron epitomizes elegance, power, and exceptional length on the palate, improving with each passing year and capable of aging for over 40 years.

THE MILLENNIUM

  • Autumn: Mild and dry
  • Winter: Cold and wet, with abundant rainfall replenishing the soil’s water reserves. We recorded 456 mm of rain, 30% more than in 2022.
  • Early April: Budburst and a frost episode on April 5, with limited impact.
  • Spring: Generally warm and dry, with excellent conditions for flowering.
  • July: Tropical weather at the start, followed by a hot, dry end with no heatwaves.
  • Early August: Cool, cloudy weather with beneficial rains that maintained high acidity in the berries.
  • September: Warm weather and beneficial rain on September 20, particularly aiding the Cabernets’ ripening process.

HARVESTING

Harvesting occurred from September 12 to October 4:

  • Merlot: September 12 to 22
  • Cabernet Franc: September 16 and 21
  • Petit Verdot: September 19
  • Cabernet Sauvignon: September 23 to October 4

VINIFICATION

Maceration temperatures ranged from 25 to 27°C. Extractions were focused during fermentation, with daily tastings refining the duration of post-fermentation maceration. Merlot run-off occurred from September 30 to October 12, and Cabernet from October 10 to 24. Malolactic fermentation proceeded rapidly under marc, allowing for regular entonnage in separate batches, completed by November 4. The 2023 vintage is characterized by pure, fresh, and precise fruit, balancing tension and power, reminiscent of the fruit and finesse of 2019 and the power and length of 2020.

AGEING

  • Duration: 18 months
  • Barrels: 70% new barrels, 30% one-wine barrels
