The fullness and fruity framework of a Pauillac red wine

The estate: Nestled in the esteemed Pauillac appellation, the illustrious Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande stands as a Second Grand Cru Classé. Acquired by the Miailhe family in 1925, this estate on Bordeaux’s Left Bank has seen a legacy of dedication. From the leadership of May-Eliane de Lencquesaing to its current ownership by the Rouzaud family of Louis Roederer Champagne, Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande continues to shine.

The vineyard: Encompassing 102 hectares, with 80 under production, Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande boasts gravelly hilltop soils atop a sandy-clay subsoil. Managed with integrated viticulture and biodynamic practices on 32 hectares, the vineyard’s 28-year-old vines contribute to crafting this exceptional Pauillac wine.

The vintage: A mild, dry winter transitioned into a warm spring, prompting an early budburst in April. Sheltered by its proximity to the estuary and fortified by diligent vineyard management, frost nights had minimal impact. Despite an unpredictable and rainy June, followed by drought and heatwaves in July, the grapes ripened well ahead of schedule, benefiting from thunderstorms that restored balance.

Winemaking and ageing: Vinification by plot and gravity-fed vats in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. Aged for 18 months in barrels (60% new) with medium toasting and traditional racking.

Blend

Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 2022 is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (78%), Merlot (17%), and Cabernet Franc (5%).
